Why participate in The Online Academy?

•Four high school students want to take AP chemistry, yet district resources prohibit offering such a small class.

• Three students in rural Virginia want to take a physics course, but there is no teacher available in their community.

• Academically successful students in many school divisions want to pursue a college-bound curriculum without losing the option to participate in choir, band, art, and/or computer science electives.

• Steve is a home-schooled student that is interested is supplementing his home instruction

• Martha has been diagnosed with mononucleosis and must stay home for six weeks. She does not want to fall behind in her classes.

The Graduate School of Education at George Mason University, Frederick County Public Schools, Loudoun County Public Schools, and Stafford County Public Schools have joined together to create virtual learning opportunities for high school students. Combining resources, knowledge, and expertise, these school divisions and George Mason University are developing virtual high school courses that reflect robust opportunities for students and meet Virginia’s Standards of Learning through innovative online options.
